Why it’s still the hero ingredient that is so often forgotten.

One of the first things you’re introduced to when you first begin your skincare journey, at whatever age, is hyaluronic acid. A beginner friendly, elementary ingredient everyone’s hyped up, yet you’re too nervous to try. Eventually you do, after which you get around to trying all the buzz-worthy ingredients as well; salicylic acid, niacinamide, and then eventually the big one – retinol.
But in all the chaos of buying into and trying all these speciality ingredients, that often deserve your attention, and many times give you quick results, you forget about the humble hyaluronic acid. Ah, yes. The humble hyaluronic acid, the key ingredient, so glazed over, we eventually forget it altogether.

It happened to me too, that’s why I’ve made it a crucial part of my skin journey, and my skin-cycling component, incorporating it in up to three nightly routines. See, I often try new ingredients, often strong exfoliants, or things that just disrupt the health of my skin barrier. That’s when I turn to the humble hyaluronic acid.

The name doesn’t do it any favours, the use of ‘acid’ in the name can be a put off for many, but it’s simply hydration. Our skin is the largest organ of our body, and there’s nothing like drinking 3-4 litres of water a day. But still, there is merit to topical hydration of the skin, and it allows for plumper, healthier looking skin.

On days when you wake up feeling fatigued and your skin looks extra-crusty and wrinkly, hyaluronic is your answer.

On days when you just need to give your skin a rest, yes, it’s hyaluronic acid to the rescue. Even on days when you’ve had a long day and need an SOS after a full-day of wearing make-up – hyaluronic acid will be there for you.

Fair to mention that if you live anywhere with warmer climate (I live in a literal desert), it’s almost more important for you to use a product with hyaluronic acid. Use it daily if you need, it’s only a good thing. Also – to state it plainly, most hyaluronic acid-based serums are quite basic formulations, so it simply shouldn’t cost you a lot of money. If you’re paying over $40-50, you are absolutely overpaying. The one exception to this rule is the Medik8 Hydr8 B5 Intense Serum. It’s a tried-and-tested game changer.

Here are some hyaluronic acid serums and toners you absolutely cannot go wrong with:

  1. The Ordinary Multi-Peptide + HA Serum

  2. Torriden Dive-in Low Molecular Hyaluronic Acid Serum

  3. Medik8 Hydr8 B5 Intense Serum

  4. Etude SoonJung pH 5.5 Relief Toner

  5. Mixsoon Glacier Water Hyaluronic Acid Serum

  6. Anua PDRN Hyaluronic Acid Capsule 100 Serum
