Nine months into 2026 and the pattern is hard to ignore. Look at any credible list of the year's best albums and the names at the top are almost entirely women. Not as a quota, not as a trend piece, but because the records themselves have been the most interesting things happening in music. This week's MOLTN playlist is built around that fact.

Kelela's new avatar is the album the club has been waiting on since 2023, a liquid, late-night record that makes most of her peers sound like they are still warming up. Olivia Rodrigo, meanwhile, has done the thing every pop star claims to want and few manage: she grew up on record without losing the bite. Drop Dead and Stupid Song are the proof.

The sad girl canon has two new entries, and both are excellent. Phoebe Bridgers' Lost Weekend is her sharpest writing yet, and Mitski's latest continues her run of albums that sound like nobody else is even attempting. Then there is RAYE, who has followed her Grammy sweep with a maximalist second album that features Hans Zimmer and somehow earns him.

And the veterans refuse to move aside. Madonna returning to the dancefloor with Confessions II is the most sensible decision she has made in a decade. Robyn's Sexistential, a decade in the making, reminds everyone who Scandinavian pop actually belongs to. In between sits Angine de Poitrine's Vol.II, the wildcard of the bunch and the track we keep coming back to at 6 minutes 31.

None of this is a coincidence. The women on this list are doing the things the industry keeps saying it wants, taking risks, writing honestly, releasing albums rather than content. The charts have followed them there. So has our playlist.
