The iPhone Finally Folds. Here's What Apple Launched Last Night

Tim Cook ran Apple for fifteen years without ever putting a hinge in an iPhone. John Ternus needed one keynote. His first event as chief executive, streamed from Cupertino at 9pm Dubai time on Tuesday, opened with the product Samsung has been shipping since 2019 and closed with a health platform that wants to book your blood tests. In between came the phones most people will actually buy, two watches, a pair of AirPods that finally got interesting, and a Siri that now runs on Google's brain.

Here is what matters, in the order it matters.

iPhone Duo: the folding phone, at last

The name is Duo, not Fold, not Ultra, and the restraint tells you how Apple wants this read. It opens like a book to a 7.6-inch inner screen with a nano-texture finish, the same matte treatment Apple sells on its Studio Display, and closes to a 5.4-inch outer display. Open, it measures 5.2mm. Shut, 11.3mm. It weighs 254 grams, which is heavier than an 18 Pro Max in your palm and lighter than the Pro Max in your head.

The frame is Grade 5 titanium. The hinge cover is 3D-printed titanium with carbon fibre support underneath, and Apple is claiming the inner screen is close to crease-free. We'll believe that in person. Two colours: Night Sky and Star White. Two cameras: a 48MP main with a 2x optical crop and a 48MP ultrawide. There's no telephoto, no Face ID (Touch ID sits in the side button), no physical SIM anywhere in the world, and no Action Button. The selfie camera on the inner screen hides under the display.

It's AED 8,499 for 256GB and climbs to a 2TB model that costs more than a decent watch.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max: the one you'll actually buy

The headline is the A20 Pro, Apple's first 2nm chip. Six-core CPU, seven-core GPU, and a neural engine Apple describes as dual 16-core. Twenty percent faster than last year on paper, 40 percent better on graphics, and a vapour chamber three times the size of the one in the 17 Pro, which is Apple's way of saying it stays quick when it gets hot. Relevant for anyone reading this in August.

The camera change is the bigger story. The 48MP main sensor gets a real variable aperture, six laser-cut blades with four stops, so you choose your depth of field rather than letting Portrait Mode fake it.

The Dynamic Island shrinks and can now hold three Live Activities. Colours are Black, Silver, Glacier, and Burgundy. Burgundy is the one, and the one that will be hardest to find in October.

Battery: 36 hours of video on the Pro, 45 on the Pro Max, which Apple is calling the longest battery ever put in an iPhone. Fifteen minutes on a charger gets you to half. Five minutes buys you seven hours of video. The UAE, along with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain, gets the eSIM-only model, which is what makes those numbers possible. Say goodbye to the SIM tray.

The base iPhone 18 was nowhere to be seen. It's been pushed to spring alongside an iPhone Air 2 and an 18e.

Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4: the readiness score arrives

Apple has been letting Whoop and Oura own the recovery conversation for three years. Not any more. Both new watches carry a Health Sensing System that samples heart rate every five seconds all day and HRV every five minutes, roughly 24 times more often than before. Out of that comes a readiness score from 0 to 10, sorted into four bands: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, Go For It. If you've paid a monthly subscription for that exact number, you can now stop.

The Series 12 comes in 42mm and 46mm on the S11 chip, at AED 1,599. Aluminium in Dark Bronze, Black, Light Gold, and Space Gray, with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front. Titanium in Radiant Gold and Natural. And the one that will do the rounds on Instagram: a ceramic case in Pearl White and Night Blue. Battery holds at 24 hours, but a 15-minute charge now gives you 12 hours.

The Ultra 4 is AED 3,199, in 3D-printed recycled titanium in Natural and Black. Fifty hours of normal use, 84 in low power, and a Max Extended Workout mode rated for 45 hours, which Apple says covers a 100-mile race. There's a new translucent silicone Ocean Band in Gray, Kelp, and Black.

The Ultra 4 Hermès gets a Grand H titanium bracelet with a built-in extension that opens to fit over a wetsuit, plus an ocean-themed face.

Both watches also pick up Audio Intelligence: the watch can transcribe the last 15 seconds of a conversation, identify sounds around you, and let Siri summarise. Everything is opt-in and nothing is stored. One catch for the Gulf: hypertension notifications won't be switched on in the UAE at launch, pending regulatory clearance. Apple is saying 2027.

AirPods 5: noise cancelling at the entry price

The most quietly aggressive move of the night. AirPods 5 are open-ear, no silicone tips, and they now come with active noise cancellation as standard at AED 539. Apple claims they block up to 50 percent more noise than the AirPods 4, a model that cost more. H2 chip, IP57, four hours with ANC on, 20 with the case.

Spend AED 629, and you get the wireless charging case, which sits on the Apple Watch puck or any Qi pad, an extra hour of listening, and a force sensor in the stem that responds to a swipe for volume, a first on an open-ear AirPods. Live Translation now runs across the entire AirPods range. Out on 18 September.

Siri, powered by Gemini

Apple said the word Google out loud on stage, which took some doing. The new Siri arrives with iOS 27 on 14 September, built on Gemini, with personal context across Messages, Mail, and Photos, awareness of what's on your screen, and hooks into the camera. English only at launch. French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish follow in October. Arabic is not on the list yet, and Apple is pointing to 2027 for the region. Nothing for the EU or China. There are daily usage caps on the server-side features, and a paid tier is coming, details unannounced.

If you want the best iPhone, the 18 Pro Max in Burgundy is AED 5,499 and you pre-order Saturday at 5pm. If you want the object that will actually change how you train, it's the Series 12 in ceramic, and it's in stores next Friday.
